A Different Place To Start.
A few thoughts on capacity, and where the five guides begin.
“You need not, and in fact cannot, teach an acorn to grow into an oak tree, but when given a chance, its intrinsic potentialities will develop."
Karen Horney
If you are reading this, you may have done some of this work already. Perhaps a great deal of it.
Meditation. Breathwork. Coaching. Therapy, sometimes for years. Maybe a retreat that felt extraordinary and then, within weeks of returning, had somehow not changed much. You may have language for your patterns, know where they came from and what they protect.
And still there are seasons when nothing seems to reach.
I experienced this myself for some time without knowing what it was. Sitting with a feeling while something in me braced. Noticing what arose and immediately managing it. Extending myself compassion the way you might recite a phrase in a language you do not speak. The form was correct. Not much landed. And I know I was not alone in it. I have heard it from others since.
What kept striking me was that the practices were rarely the problem. Something else was missing underneath them. So I studied again, and looked more closely at what the body and psyche need in place before anything can take hold.
The word I keep returning to is capacity.
Not capability, which you have. Capacity: how much can be met at any given moment without being overwhelmed by it. Capacity moves. It narrows under sustained pressure, after loss,in the long middle of a transition when nothing has settled yet.And when it narrows, the things that usually work stop working. Not because they were suddenly wrong, but because there is less room to receive them. This is not a deficit. It is closer to weather.
And I have come to think capacity rests on something more fundamental still.
We can only meet what we feel safe enough to meet.
Which is worth saying plainly, because most of us try to think our way past this. We read more, understand more, explain ourselves more precisely, and wonder why nothing shifts. But the mind can know perfectly well that there is no danger while the body goes on sensing alarm, and no further explanation closes that gap.
Something has to change underneath the explaining, and that change tends to involve the body, not only the understanding.
That is where these five guides begin.
They came out of this exploration. Each takes a piece of what tends to be needed and puts it into something simple enough to use on an ordinary day. They are entry points rather than a course.
You may have plenty of inner safety already and want emotional work. You may want a review of old beliefs you have started to question. You may want to explore how you hold yourself, and how you say what you mean.
Start where the pull is.
The first is about inner safety, which is where there is often least ground and where the most rests.
What they share is an invitation rather than an instruction: to pause long enough to notice what your capacity actually is just now, and to work with that rather than against it. Everything else tends to follow from there.
Or perhaps you are simply curious. That is reason enough to begin.
Enjoy.
Guide 1: Clear The Fog Enough steadiness to focus again. Inner safety before calm.
Guide 2: Ground To be published soon. Ground you can stand on, and a rhythm that is actually yours.
Guide 3. Rise Higher. Clearer sight of what shaped you, met with compassion.
Guide 4. Move with Your Innate Compass. What you actually want, beneath what you have been carrying.
Guide 5. Embody the Shift. Where the change begins to hold.
